I came across this mask when I was scouring my beauty folder. In which, contains a plethora of sources and research articles that are based on diets, regimes, ingredients and other beauty related topics. The lactic acid in yoghurt helps to exfoliate any surface dead skin on the surface of the dermis, the honey to act as an antibacterial and soothes any redness and the lemon juice to keep skin brightened and help to temporarily* dull dark spots. Mix these ingredients together and you not only have a delicious lemon smoothie, but a cooling and light mask.
My skin has been dry of late, but I will go into the reasons in another upcoming post. This mask is particularly helpful in summer, when the majority of us undergo a surge in sebum production. This mask, counteracts oiliness, but also soothes dryness. In other words, this balances any combination skin on the face.
*Note: This is not a cure for blemish prone skin, nor will it bleach the skin to diminish any pigmentation. Pigmentation/hyper-pigmentation is a naturally occurring process and can be treated effectively by a dermatologist with the correct tools. Those with more melanin in the epidermis layer, especially those from India, Africa and other tropical regions, are prone to hyper-pigmentation. This includes myself, especially if I breakout, the aftermath always involves dark spots which are difficult to fade with the aid of “whitening” substances.
METHOD
1 Tablespoon of Greek Yoghurt (I only had the Lite version)
Use the juice of 1/2 a small lemon
Mix in with the yoghurt and rest for a few minutes
Take 1 tablespoon of manuka honey
- you can find this in your grocer or a health-food store
Stir in the honey and the lemon juice thoroughly.
No honey clumps should remain, it will result in a smooth caramel coloured texture.
You should be able to write with it if you have used a Lite Greek Yoghurt like I did.
However, the texture may differ in regards to the brand of yoghurt you have used.
This doesn’t change the effect of the mask.
Directions:
Halve the recipe if you don’t want to reuse and have the remaining amount go to waste.
- Apply a generous layer on your face.
- Leave for 10 minutes and go relax!
- Rinse off with a mild, creamy cleanser under cold water ~ warm water will react with the lemon juice causing your skin to feel tight and dry. This mask is help rebalance not over dry your skin.
- Pat dry with a soft towel, rubbing and wiping in a harsh manner will cause irritation.

Nice recipe, and seems yummy too (LOL)! Though I would caution in using lemon juice on my skin as it can actually irritate my skin and cause redness and minor burning sesations. I would get the same result even if I use Vit C serums.
Hi Erin,
Have you tried the oatmeal mask instead? It maybe useful in calming any redness and at the same time help to brighten your skin. You could leave the lemon juice out altogether and just use a thick greek yoghurt and honey instead. I do this when my skin is feeling quite dry.
xx
No I haven’t, will definitely give it a try. Thanks for the tip
